Cheese, onion & chilli scones

A tasty savoury scone recipe

Cheese, onion & chilli scones are ideal for lunch or as a snack.

Make and bake these savoury scones in just 30 minutes.

Mix vegetarian cheddar, pieces of onion and flecks of red chilli with butter, flour and milk. Form the mixture into a dough and cut it into six rounds. Top the rounds with extra cheese, onion & chilli before baking them in the oven.

Tips for busy cooks

Onion – if you don’t have a microwave you can cook the onion in the oil in a frying pan.

Cheese – I use vegetarian cheddar in this recipe. But any vegetarian hard cheese would work.

Chilli – use red or green chilli & put as much as you like in the scone dough (depending on how much or little heat you want).

Serving suggestions:

Ingredients

  • 100 g onion (approx. ½ large) peeled & finely chopped (reserve some for topping)
  • ½ tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 225 g self-raising flour sifted (plus extra for flouring)
  • 60 g unsalted butter cut into cubes (plus extra for greasing)
  • 150 g cheddar vegetarian, grated (reserve some for topping)
  • 1 small red chilli. deseeded & finely chopped reserve some for topping
  • Black pepper ground
  • 80 ml milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan. Grease a large baking tray with butter.
  2. Put the onion and olive oil in a microwave-safe container with a lid and microwave on high for 3 minutes.
  3. Put the flour and butter into a large mixing bowl. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  4. Add most of the cheese, most of the onion, most of the chilli and some black pepper & mix into the flour. Gradually add the milk and mix with a table knife until it is combined with the flour. Use your hands to gently bring the mixture together to form a dough.
  5. Lightly flour a kitchen surface and roll the dough out until it is about 2cm thick. Use a cookie cutter or glass (that is about 6cm in diameter) to cut out six scones.
  6. Place the scones spaced out on the greased baking tray and top with the remaining cheese, onion and chilli. Bake the scones in the oven for 20 – 25 minutes. Remove the scones from the oven and put them on a wire rack to cool.

Recipe Notes
